Practice History
Harwood Group Practice has been providing care to the community for over 50 years, emphasizing quality and standard of care. Our goal is to offer high-quality care to both prevent and treat illness among our patients.
The practice, as it exists today, was established by Dr. Whitewright after the war. He settled in Bolton and took over the Tonge Moor practice following the creation of the NHS in 1948. Dr. Whitewright became the first Bolton GP to be a fellow of the Royal College of GPs in 1976.
Originally located in a private house in Tonge Moor, the practice later expanded to include branch surgeries in Breightmet and Harwood. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the practice was mainly run by doctors. From then to the present day, the practice has moved to Tonge Moor Health Centre and later to Harwood Health Centre, now owned by the partnership. We are now known as Harwood Group Practice, consisting of Harwood Medical Centre and Tonge Moor Medical Centre.
Over the past 20 years, the partnership has grown to include 7 GP partners, Practice Nurses, Health Care Assistants, Musculoskeletal Practitioners, a Mental Health Practitioner, Advanced Clinical Practitioner, Pharmacists, and Health Improvement Practitioners. We have expanded our role in training and teaching, currently instructing trainee GPs, Foundation Doctors, and students from Manchester Medical School.
Our Practice also includes a large Administration team, Practice Manager, and Assistant Practice Manager.
